Mount Vesuvius, an unstable volcanic mountain centered in the city of Pompeii was responsible for complete destruction and devastation to the city of Pompeii. Burying the city alive, killing everyone in its path, and rendering the land utterly useless. These mountain sides still carry the scars of the ash and lava, however the lower slopes are covered in extremely fertile lands and are the home of some of the most unique and exquisite wine varietals in Italy.
There are many theories and stories about how these lower regions of Mount Vesuvius came to be. Stories explaining how the lands were able to rebuild and breathe new life into the ashy soil. Each story theme touches upon on central idea; LaCryma Christi translating to the “Tears of Christ” came raining down from heaven to produce lush vines that would bare grapes necessary to produce the Piedirosso and Aglianico grape varietal. That these tears were able to transform the barren wasteland into a vine garden full of life and hope. The tears gave birth to the wine, LaCryma Christi.
The wine Tasting
Due to the strong tannins of this wine, I let this particular wine aerate for 3 hours. That vastly improved the flavor and structure of the wine. I also tested half the bottle aerating for 6 hours which seem to even further enhance the wine flavor and allowed the free radicals to despite.
The first sniff was like a jolt to my senses like one would receive after being knocked unconscious and revived. It was “blow your hair back” intense. It burned in my nostrils like the fires from Pompeii. Upon swirling through my mouth and nose it began to level out and gave-way to a sense of purity with emerged fruit tones speckled with pepper and cinnamon. A scent rich with minerals and soot forcing an intense rocky culture to unfold inside my body.
The wild spontaneity of this dry red blend continued to unwind as I began swirl the tears of christ into my mouth and down my throat. A wine so unique with flavor I was almost convinced of it's folklore. I felt the wine dripping into my soul and lighting a path of fire to mark its trail. The city of Pompeii was alive in this wine, it was telling its story over and over again. This wine tasted tart with broken berries, a splash of spice and pepper, and tinge of chocolate. The ashy volcanic rock was present in each sip as almost an offensive slap across your face. A reminder of the tragic past and the tears that were shed for this wine to be birthed. The flavors melted together and lingered on my tongue for what seemed like forever.
This Italian wine grown from the tears of heaven will leave an impression on all your senses and a lasting imprint on your being. It will teach you its rich history while scolding and rewarding you all at once. This ruby red dark mystery wine can only be described by your own taste buds. Let them be your guide through the unexpected adventure of the LaCryma Christi Red.
